DON'T PANIC

Seriously the fight or flight theory comes to mind but in a zombie apocalypse do not flee! While cars are ultimately the first place people go to in a time of panic it does one no good to drive aimlessly while others are panicking in the process creating a huge build up of traffic. This is a perfect target for a zombie feast, and once encountered with a horde you will be trapped in your car! If this happens do not exit the vehicle, and do not attempt to fight from inside the car it only draws attention. If you can wait it out and maybe there will be a break in the trauma, it isn't likely but the most common cause of incidental death would be due to panicking!
