firearm or machete, which one is better?

What Ive found in my research is that firearms and machetes seem always to be on zombie survival gear lists. My theory is that machetes may be silent, unlike firearms, but machetes decrease range between you and said zombie, therefore forcing the human, yourself, to risk getting closer to said zombie, just to make a kill.
Now having said this, when you get your zombie survival bag packed, and ready to go, think on whether you would rather be four feet away, or 200- 250 yards away.
