Shotgun vs M4 vs 10/22
1 box of shotgun rounds (25 shots) is equal in size/weight to approximately 5 boxes (20 rounds each) of .223 rounds which is equal to approximately 4 boxes (100 rounds each) of .22 rounds.
The question I find myself asking is, "Are you a poor shot that wants to carry a LOT of weight (go for the shotgun) or are you a decent shot that doesn't mind to carry some weight (M4 all the way) or are you a great shot that wants to keep things light (Ruger 10/22 but not a lot of power behind the .22)? I prefer all three - it just depends on the situation. Backup pistols are good, I like the power of a .45 but also like a Ruger 10/22 rifle and Ruger Mark I/II/III combo for compatibility of using the same round. Again, it would depend on the situation. Melee weapons are out of the question - letting one or more zombies get that close is just not thinking a situation through...stay away from any situation that would let a zombie get into melee weapon range, it's just common sense. I didn't read the whole article. I finally stopped reading when the poor spelling and grammar compounded my anger of the poorer ideas it was trying to portray.

Not an expert...just a thinker.
