This is usually started by some kind of outbreak of a “zombie plague” due to an infectious zombie like disease. Those killed by or infected by zombies in turn into zombies themselves. The plague spreads quickly, exponentially, and is unable to be controlled. The survivors barricade themselves in protective shelters and are forced to scavenge for food and supplies. Check out the

Zombie Apocalypse Elements
Most of the common elements of the zombie apocalypse depend on the type of zombie, which has sprung the outbreak
(see zombie taxonomy).
There are many basic elements common to most depictions of a zombie apocalypse. In the context of the story the generation of zombies is unique; such a thing has never been seen before, leading to responses of initial disbelief and, after the evidence becomes undeniable, psychological shock. Usually the authorities are slow to understand the true nature of the threat, first responding with inaction or inappropriate tactics and thus giving it time to grow beyond hope of containment.
Often the specific cause for the reanimation of the dead is indeterminate or, if known, cannot be controlled by broad countermeasures with available technologies. In either case, there is no way to stop the dead from rising after the phenomenon has begun. The zombies are usually bestial, motivated by a need to consume living humans or at least fulfill an imperative to retransmit an infection by biting or clawing their victims.
This leads to vast slaughter and very personal terror during encounters with the undead. Individually the zombies are physically unremarkable except for being unaffected by any but one specific kind of wound (traditionally decapitation, or the destruction of the brain. Common Origins of Apocalypse
There are a few common origins of the zombie apocalypse. These share the common elements discussed above but derive from different sources. It is also reflected by the type of zombie that arises.
The spawn of some kind of virus may it be natural or engineered that turns human beings into mindless killing machines. In reality brain disorders exist that have just about the same effects. Several parasites are found in nature that alters the behavior of their host parasites. There are other diseases cause by prions such as mad cow disease that effect the cows central nervous system in the same way, it seems very probable that a similar form of disease can effect humans. Apocalypse technically refers to a revelation of God's Will. Apocalyptic literature is of considerable importance in the history of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic beliefs as well as many other religions such as Hindu’s concept of pralay. It makes specific references to beliefs such as the resurrection of the dead, judgment day, eternal life, final judgment and perdition. the Last Judgment is the judgment by God of every human who ever lived It will take place after the resurrection of the dead. This belief has inspired numerous artistic depictions. It is a theory that the zombie apocalypse could be the result of gods will.
There are other powers mentioned in most religions, dark powers. A supernatural being, believed to be a powerful, evil entity and the tempter of humankind. This entity is commonly referred to by a variety of names, including Abbadon, Angra Mainyu, Satan, the devil Asmodai, Beelzebub, Lucifer, Belial, and Iblis has the duty to test humankind with evil and trickery. It is an apocalyptic scenario that he will set forth zombie invasion.
