Zombie Survival Guide Essentials

Zombie survival situations might not always be as quick and easy as one might think. You might even have to kill a zombie or twenty. In extreme zombie survival situations one could be stranded in place for a long time. Even if shelter provides perfect protection from hungry zombies, survival could be difficult. In any siege situation, the basic needs of food and water must be maintained. Larger zombie horde populations might last a few days, weeks, or even years. In order to survive in these cases one must prepare. Here is a short survival guide that should help with the skills needed in a zombie siege situation.

It is important to be aware of your surroundings, when catastrophic events happen their may be a great lack of law enforcement and medical services. Even if you are in some what zombie protected area beware of anything that could cause injury to you or those around you. Normal law and regulations my not be enforced, so watch out for that car driving 100mph in a 25mph zone. After any major disaster, you may have to protect your home and belongings from looters. And easy solution is to post a large sign stating “looters will be shot” or something along that line, this will defer many small criminals. If zombie siege conditions last long enough neighbors who are not prepared will run out of supplies quickly and desperate times call for desperate measures, so watch out , desperate people do stupid things. That last thing you need is to have some idiot break your zombie barricade because they know you have food and water. You might have to make some hard decisions in order to protect you family.

Water, Life or Death

So the first step is to not be that desperate person who runs out of supplies after a few short days. One of the most important elements of human survival is access to fresh clean water. It’s important to be able to find, store, and purify water for long periods of time. Typically a conservative person would plan to have one gallon of water a day to survive and stay healthy. It would be smart to store a few weeks worth of water in advance. Create a stash that would last you about two weeks with one and a half gallons of water per person per day. This should be enough to meet your as well as provide water for cooking. Large Multi-gallon containers for water storage can be found for commercial purchase.

Large zombie uprisings may occur far away which may give you a little time to get ready, other times plagues of zombie hordes move so fast you will not have enough time to react effectively. If you knew the water was going to be shut off for a few days what steps would you do? People living in some more rural areas know to fill up all their pots and pans when the thunderstorms roll in. This is easy to do if you know the storm will end in a day or so. Unfortunately a zombie apocalypse would most likely last longer than a day.

With a short term notice there are a few easy ways to increase your water supply from a day or so to more than a week. An easy option is to fill all sinks, bathtubs and then dump the trash and fill trash cans with clean trash bags to the top with water. It might also be smart to buy a children’s blow up toy swimming pool to keep in your closet and to be used for water storage once the undead are notices roaming the streets. Other sources such as you hot water heater, or even water pipes can be drained if needed.

Keep in mind that these sources of water are limited, so and finding new sources of water is a necessity. Remember to be conservative; you can’t survive long without water. Creating a system for collecting rain water, could make life much easier. This can be accomplished by modifying your gutter system, using large tarps to channel water into a container or even directing every pot pan and cup you own the open sky. This would be very easy to do if everyone lived in the rain forest; there are some locations with climates that do not make this such a simple task. In these not so water friendly locations it is important to know where other water sources are available, may it be water towers, reservoirs or streams. Find a guide or map of with information about your location and locate possible sources. If drastic measures call for it you might even have to leave your secure location and scout the ghoul infested lands to find water. If so be sure to plan your trips carefully and try to minimize interaction if possible.

Water that is dirty or contaminated could make you very sick causing you to become even weaker, more dehydrated or could possibly even kill you. It’s important to remember that not all water is drinkable without proper purification. In a zombie infested environment it might not be likely that medical services are available so every precaution must be taken to preserve good health. Some water purification chemical treatment kits can be found it stores but these usually are designed for short term use and do not have a long shelf life once the packages have been opened. An easy way to chemically treat water is with a small amount of bleach. 1 teaspoon of bleach will treat 10 gallons of water. Commercial pump filters and purifiers can also be found in stores. These are usually designed for backpacking or hiking and are not usually designed to be used on a day to day basis for a long period of time.

The best way purify relatively filtered water is to boil it. You should boil all the water found from natural sources for at least 20 to 30 minutes to kill all the bacteria before drinking it. Its not necessary to boil the water longer than that it will just be wasteful due to the water loss from steam. This method is reasonably easy to do, you just need fire or a heat source and proper container. Its important to remember that just boiling the water may remove harmful bacteria and other microbes but it will not remove physical materials from the water.

Zombie feast of famine

A man can sometimes live more than a few weeks without food depending on how much fat he has stored, however it is still one of the basic fundamentals of survival. Even though your body can rely on using body fat it is not healthy. After a few days without food the body and brain become fatigued, the immune system weakens making you prone to illness. In intense situations with zombies it is crucial to be healthy, have a sharp mind and quick reflexes. Keeping two weeks of food is essential. It is not hard to have at least 3 months available, over stalking is better that having a shortage during a zombie feast.

In hard times it is very probable that the electricity with be cut off and the refrigerator will not work. Most food items will not last longer than a few days. Don’t risk compromising yourself by eating rotting, bacteria infested food, keep a good emergency food reserve. Good long term food reserves contain dried and canned foods. Most of these foods found at the supermarket will last at least five years, just be sure to continually rotate out and eat the older foods from your storage, followed by restocking to keep everything as fresh as possible. Take time to figure out how much you and your family eat per day, calculate how much that would be for 1-3 months, or however long you want, then double it. You never know when a zombie outbreak might happen and you might be supplying for more than you planned. It would also be smart to have back up cooking materials such as baking soda, oil, flour and sugar.

Special survival foods can bought, such as MRE’s, that last much longer than normal dried and canned foods. These are great but save them for last, you want to eat all the things that can go bad first. These special food items can be found in bulk such as one gallon cans of powdered milk, five pound bags of macaroni and so on. Many of these items can be mixed together to make full meals and can store for a very long time. Be sure to have items that make as well balanced meal and contain all essential minerals, vitamins and nutrients.
