Zombies to Invade the East Coast

Zombies have long been a part of our popular culture – through movies, books, comics and now a hit TV series – causing many a person to fantasize or even prepare for how they would escape the potentially impending undead apocalypse. For the first time ever, zombie lovers and fighters alike will have the chance to put their training to the test by living out their favorite zombie story and navigating their way to survival.
On October 22, 2011, 10,000 brave souls from across the country will have the opportunity to take part in the Run for Your Lives, a first-of-its-kind and completely unique race that takes participants through a series of 10 obstacles over a 5K course, all while being chased by zombies. Participants will make strategic choices to find the quickest route to the finish line hopefully with their health still intact. Survivors and newly-created zombies will be able to celebrate following the historic event at the Apocalypse Party, which will feature live entertainment, music, local celebrities, vendors, food, beer and of course, zombies.
“We’ve always been huge fans of zombie folklore and wanted to create a live action experience that provides fans with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,”
said Ryan Hogan, managing member of Reed Street Productions, which developed the race. “For training, we recommend some running, along with in-depth studying of zombie movies – it’s not the fastest who will win, it’s the one that can best out-maneuver his foes.”
The 10 obstacles will test participants’ agility, strategy and coolness under pressure. The first obstacle, which was released last month, is the Terrible Tubes. As stealth travel is a must during the zombie apocalypse, racers must navigate this sewage system filled with mud, trash and other forms of disgusting sewage.
Run For Your Lives – which will take place in Darlington, Md., conveniently located between Baltimore and Philadelphia – has already drawn registrations from throughout the country, as well as requests for events to be held in other North American and European cities. Additional information about auditions for everyday people to transform into zombies for the October event will be announced this summer.
Registration packages start as low as $67 for participants and include race shirt, admission to the Apocalypse Party, a medal signifying your survival or zombie transformation, and advanced training for the zombie apocalypse.
Spectator and camping packages are also available. Prizes will be given to the top male and female human finishers in several age brackets. There will also be two awards brackets for military participants.
